Climate Wayfinding:
a workshop for higher education faculty & staff

This workshop is a 4-day, first-of-its-kind experience of exploration and discovery to foster clarity, courage, and connection for your climate journey. This cohort will be composed entirely of higher education professionals. Following the workshop, participants will also engage in a short co-design experience (held virtually) to help tune this program for use within higher education.

  • Location: Omega Institute, Rhinebeck, NY

  • 4 days/3 nights, June 11–14, 2023

  • Program cost: No program fee

  • Travel & accommodation: Attendees pay for travel to/from and housing at Omega (~$400-1000 for 3 nights, including meals)

Discover your unique climate contribution

1 • Look inward — explore your essential climate emotions, skills/superpowers, and guiding values

Audre Lorde taught that “our feelings are our most genuine paths to knowledge.” We will unearth the essential emotions, values, and motivations that we bring with us into climate engagement, as well as the skills and superpowers we want to contribute to this moment of collective transformation.

2 • Look outward — explore climate solutions, accelerators for change, and “kindred” initiatives

The toolbox of climate solutions is vast and varied, and there are powerful accelerators or leverage points for change. We will use our energy as a way to filter and gain focus. Then we will ground those possibilities in our contexts and communities — the spheres within which change can happen.

3 • Look forward — design a personalized ‘compass’ to guide your climate journey

Climate wayfinding is the work of our lifetimes and a muscle we will continue to use and develop. We will weave together the threads of exploration and discovery to each create our own “climate compass”, define our growth edges, and plan for next steps.

“So many people are grappling with the question ‘what can I do?’ There is no simple formula, no fact sheet or checklist, for figuring out our roles in the vital work to forge a just, livable future.

Rather than stipulating actions that are one-and-done or one-size-fits-all, this course is tailor made to help us uncover ways to be of use. Together, we’ll hold our questions about climate and purpose, and work our way into answers.”

– Dr. Katharine Wilkinson

About the program

Who is this program for?

If you work at a college or university and are holding questions about your place in climate engagement and/or are looking to support students’ sense of purpose & direction, this workshop is designed for you. We think it will be especially suited to faculty and staff with student-facing roles who are looking to unpack their deeper motivations and gain focus and clarity in an affirming community.

How is this program structured?

Over the course of the 4-day workshop, ~15 selected participants will attend five sessions facilitated by Dr. Katharine Wilkinson and Nasim Fluker.

We will eat meals communally at Omega’s dining hall.

Outside of workshop sessions, participants can enjoy Omega’s beautiful campus and partake in their optional activities and amenities (e.g., meditation, yoga, canoeing, hiking).

The program breakdown

Part 1: Grounding & Climate Feelings
We’ll begin the work of building community. Then, we’ll explore essential emotions we bring with us to climate engagement, honoring them as critical grounding, guidance, and fuel.

Part 2: Solutions & Accelerators for Change
We’ll traverse the landscape of climate solutions and accelerators for change, using our energy and curiosity as a guide and a means to filter and hone.

Part 3: Skills & Superpowers
We’ll reflect on the skills and superpowers we bring to climate engagement, reflecting on personal insights both past and present.

Part 4: Context & Community
We’ll consider the contexts we’re nested within and communities we’re a part of (or could be), with attention to what feels kindred to us and relevant to climate engagement.

Part 5: Purpose & Plan
We’ll unpack our guiding values, create a “compass” to guide our paths forward, and lay out next steps to deepen/enliven our place in climate engagement.

Co-design Process
Following completion of the workshop, participants will engage in written feedback and an online co-design session (dates/times to be announced), to help the AWCS Project team tune Climate Wayfinding for use in higher education.

All career stages are welcome.

  • Faculty and staff have a range of vital roles to play in the climate community, including helping to spark and develop the next generation of change-makers. This workshop aims to be of use for faculty and staff to clarify their own unique climate contributions. It’s also part of a broader body of work The All We Can Save Project is undertaking, building on our Climate Wayfinding pilots in 2022. Ultimately, we aim to tune the program for widespread use in higher education, and the co-design process will be a key piece of doing so.
